Annual Maintenance Pruning

For fruit trees that are already well-structured and just need regular upkeep. Annual pruning maintains open canopy architecture, manages new growth, removes crossing or damaged branches, and keeps fruiting wood productive. While often performed during dormancy, maintenance pruning can be carried out throughout much of the year, depending on the species and management objectives.

Best for: Healthy, structurally sound fruit trees that need ongoing care.

Restoration Pruning

For neglected or overgrown fruit trees that have stopped producing. We evaluate the tree’s current condition and design a phased restoration—typically three visits over three years—that gradually restores proper structure, light penetration, and air circulation without unduly stressing the tree. Year one establishes the framework. Years two and three refine, rebalance, and help restore the tree’s productive capacity.

Best for: Heritage fruit trees, inherited orchards, and fruit trees that haven't been pruned in 5+ years.

Early Establishment Pruning

For newly planted fruit trees (typically during the first several years after planting). Early structural pruning guides the developing framework of the tree, helping it mature into a strong, productive, and manageable form. By making small corrections while defects are still minor, we can often prevent the need for more significant corrective pruning later in the tree’s life.

Best for: Newly planted fruit trees and young orchards just getting established.

Many Neglected Fruit Trees Can Be Restored.

Fruit trees need structure, light, and air to produce high-quality fruit. When a fruit tree goes unpruned for many years, the canopy often becomes dense with vigorous upright growth. Light penetration declines, air circulation is reduced, and productive fruiting wood gradually disappears from the interior of the tree. As a result, the tree may devote more energy to vegetative growth and produce fewer or lower-quality fruits.

The good news is that many neglected fruit trees remain fundamentally healthy. A thoughtful restoration plan — often phased over several years to avoid excessive stress — can improve structure, increase light penetration and air circulation, and encourage a return to productive fruiting. In many cases, the result is a healthier, more manageable tree and improved fruit production.
